Sacred monuments in Prague

During this tour, we will see some more prestigious places connected with the religion.

The tour starts outside the Strahov Monastery.

This monastery belongs to the religious Order of Premonstratensians. In the middle of the courtyard, there stands the medieval church of Our Lady of Assumption (rebuilt several times, the last being the Baroque style. It contains the tomb of St. Norbert, founder of the Premonstratensian Order. The church is open to public on Sundays when masses are celebrated here. You can also receive the approval of the Premonstratensian Order to organize your own mass in the church facilities.

The Shrine of Our Lady of Loreto is not far from here.

It was built, after 1626, as a place of pilgrimage in Prague. The 'Santa Casa', a copy of the house of Virgin Mary from Nazareth, forms the centre of the sanctuary. Around, there is the cloister with several chapels, confessionals and the Church of the Nativity of Jesus Christ. The treasure of the monastery is exposed on the first floor, it contains many precious objects connected with the church, among them the most precious diamond monstrance, called also the Sun of Prague, decorated with 6222 diamonds.

The Cathedral of St. Vitus, St. Wenceslas and St. Adalbert

is situated in the grounds of the Prague Castle. The three patron saints are buried there. We should also mention St. John Nepomuk, whose baroque grave was made of 2 500 kg of pure solid silver. In the cathedral are buried 15 kings of Bohemia, several bishops, archbishops and cardinals. Every Sunday in the morning, masses are celebrated regularly.

In the Lesser Town we visit the Church of Our Lady of Victory.

It owes its glory to a miraculous statue of the Infant Jesus of Prague, which is here since 1628, as a gift of Polyxena of Lobkowicz. In the church are celebrated, each day, masses in several languages. The church always receives many pilgrims, here they can organize their own mass. The Infant Jesus of Prague is much loved and revered and continues to receive several gifts. The Brazilians installed, from September 2007, next to him, Our Lady Aparecida from Brazil. In the sacristy of the church, there is a small exhibition of gifts sent to the Infant Jesus of Prague from various countries (the Philippines, Canada, Ecuador, China, Brazil, Portugal, Spain and many other countries).

In the Old Town, we mention especially the Church of Our Lady of Tyn and the Saint James Church.

Prague, sometimes called the city of 100 towers, actually they are more than 500, is very rich in regard to churches, we can visit them according to the desire of the customers. An interesting proposal would be to get out of Prague and visit the Holy Mountain near Příbram. (It's an hour away). Here, we find the great Baroque sacred enclosure, the most famous place of pilgrimage in the Czech Republic. It is the centre of Marian Cult of European importance.

Žďár nad Sázavou - Pilgrimage Church of Saint John Nepomuk in Zelená Hora (UNESCO heritage listed in the year 1994)

The pilgrimage church, dedicated to St. John Nepomuk, was built in the early twenties of the eighteenth century. It is the masterpiece of the architect Giovanni Blasco Santini-Aichl (Jan Blažej Santini Aichl in Czech) and represents the most original example of the style called Gothic-Baroque. The building is pentagon-shaped, in the form of a five-pointed star and is surrounded by a cemetery and the colonnade.
